‘I Can See the Oligarchs from my House’
Yep, you read that right. Russia transformed from a Communist nation into an oligarchy when the Soviet Union collapsed and ‘democracy’ spread throughout the land. In El Paso County and Colorado Springs, we have an oligarchy driving us down the road to socialism.
An oligarchy is a form of government where a small group of people – typically moneyed, business interests — run the government. Here in our neck of the woods that would be the business developers and the media bloc.
The oligarchs – Nor’wood, Penrose, Anschutz, et. al. — call the shots, and the puppets-on-a-string (formerly known as the County Commissioners, City Council members, the Mayor, etc.) make it all happen. After all, when something has the imprimatur of government, how bad can it be?
Um, downright awful if you’re a taxpayer who’s just been handed the bill.
Case in point, the four developments local government is pushing for with the kind of enthusiasm we only see from Bill Clinton at a bikini contest. The Colorado Springs Independent (not part of the Anschutz media conglomerate, so you’re bound to get honest reporting) recently published this article: Downtown stadium project to be announced soon.
In the story, Mayor John Suthers (a tax-and-spend ‘Republican-in-Name-Only’) says the announcement about the projects will come as early as July 25th.
Wait a minute…weren’t we originally told it would come in in the fall following a ‘Summer of Wooing’ of government officials? Did they crank up the wooing in turbo mode? Does this mean they know they already have the votes from well-wooed El Paso County Commissioners and City Councilmen?
Our ‘elected’ officials sure have some ‘splainin’ to do! One wonders what the oligarchs put on the table to get the wooing fast-tracked…all I know is a crapload of our taxpayer money is about to be diverted to corporate welfare, about $216M over 25 years. Don’t be fooled by Suthers’s doublespeak about what is and isn’t tax money. It’s tax money. YOUR money.
“I contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.” ―Winston S. Churchill
Churchill was right. And when nations – or in this case a county and a city – try to tax us into prosperity with projects like this they’re leading us to the kind of crushing debt that socialist governments are infamous for.
But hey, the oligarchs will always be wealthy, even if it’s off our backs.
We CAN Do Something About This
In the short term, get on the phone and email and bombard your representatives and demand they start representing us. Tell them to stand up to the moneyed elites who run the county and the city.
In the long term, we need to vote out of office every incumbent and replace them with genuine conservatives. While we’re at it, let’s ensure we never again elect an establishment candidate, least of whom the typical political careerist we seem to have plenty of in this county.
In 2009, citizens revolted against Obama’s tax-and-spend insanity in the form of TEA Parties across the country. Prior to that, a group of men in Boston harbor did something similar in 1773. It’s time for another movement, this time to end the tax-and-spend RINO occupation of El Paso County. Contact me for details: firstname.lastname@example.org.
